The Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) examination is the
foundation-level certification for Cisco, one of the largest
internetworking companies in the world. The exam focuses on networking
maintenance and troubleshooting skills and is centered on installing,
configuring and operating LAN and WAN networks. While it is the basic
Cisco certification, successfully completing the CCNA exam can open many
doors to employment, promotion or advancement in various IT
professions. While the test may be intimidating, proper preparation can
help you to successfully complete the exam and progress toward further
IT certification.
Instructions
1. Select the exam route you want to take. Cisco offers two separate routes
for obtaining CCNA certification. You can either take one large,
comprehensive exam or take two smaller exams on two separate dates. The
one-exam option covers all of the CCNA basics, while the two-exam option
consists of a 90-minute introductory exam and a 60-minute networking
exam. Both options will lead to the same CCNA certification.
2. Register to take the exam. You must first register with Cisco to take
the CCNA exam. Registration is done by phone to an external, independent
testing organization, usually through either Prometric or Vue. Both of
these companies are worldwide, so you should be able to find a testing
center in your country. Contact details can be found on the Cisco
certification website. You must register at least two days before your
desired test date. However, if you have a preference for a test date,
you should register far in advance to ensure that you can reserve your
place
3. Pay the exam fee. As of 2010, the exam fee is $125 for the one-exam
option or $100 for each of the exams in the two-exam option. Taxes or
other fees may apply depending on the country in which you are taking
the exam. Your test date will not be confirmed until payment is received
either by credit card or check.
4. Prepare for the exam. Cisco has provided a wide array of exam helps to
prepare for the certification. There are practice exams, CCNA online
forums and study guides that can help you as you prepare to take the
exam. Various independent books and guides are also available both
online and in popular bookstores
5. Take and pass the exam. Arrive at the testing center 30 minutes before
your test time and bring two pieces of ID with you, one with a photo and
both with your signature. The test is taken online and is interactive.
There is online assistance available to help you if you struggle with
the online interface. Most of the questions are multiple choice, some
requiring multiple answers and focusing on specific Cisco networking
commands. A score of at least 85 percent is required to pass the exam
and receive official certification, which is valid for three years. If
you do not pass, you must wait at least 24 hours before attempting the
test again.
